On behalf of the Riker family, please accept our condolences on the loss of your mother. We have passed this news on to our mother who also wanted to express her deepest condolences. Personally, Joan was my piano teacher in the 70's and early 80's and I have fond memories of her always being patient and kind. She and John (and later Bob) were good friends of our parents and Joan always had a smile on her face and a kind word to say. They all had a lot of laughs and some raucous times back in the day!
We hope that your memories of your dear mom will help you through these difficult times.

Becky and Family:
I luckily and joyously had many wonderful moments, images, phrases, and "times" with Joan at church in Michigan and in our shared multiple shows, the exact number of which I stopped counting after a dozen..
The memories flood both the head and heart.
Perhaps Joan is the only woman to give a "bouquet" of carrots to a man-- as she certainly is the only woman to give one to me when we did "Harvey" at Wing and a Prayer Players.
All of those "times" with her were spent in joy, and frankly also gratitude and awe of Joan's wit, understanding, friendship, talent, and caring.
The shared loss that is felt is only surpassed by the knowledge of the true blessing undisguised to be able to call her a beloved friend.
May our gracious and loving God grant the swift passage of time to ease the pain.

Dear Becky and family,
I would like to extend my deepest sympathy to you on the loss of your mother.
She brought joy to so many through her music and warm personality. I had the
privilege of playing several concerts with her and clarinetist Ed Warnick. We
had so much fun rehearsing with her in her apartment at the Village. She was
a wonderful pianist and very gracious lady. We will miss her, but never forget her.

Joan was my Friend. My Capital F friend. I have small f friends, but very few Capital F Friends. She shone with a rare beautiful light on all of us. I met her in church choir at Redeemer Lutheran, and spent the first couple years being afraid of her and her immense talent. Then we 'had' to work on a project together, and I fell completely in love with her; so did my husband Mike. We sang with her, we had her save us when we had wandered off into the wrong key. She brought me to Birmingham Village Players, a major part of my life. She brought me to The Birmingham Musicale, another major part of my life. But she never let me be overshadowed by her talents. Well, maybe when she and I started the Wing and a Prayer Players. I would rale on at the cast with notes and not give her a chance to speak. She'd quietly, then more loudly call my name, until I realized I had shut her out, and apologized. Then she'd look right at me and say, "That's once."
It happened more than once, and she always forgave me.

Rest In Peace Aunt Joan. I will always treasure the memory of your invitation to visit when I was in the fourth grade, that was such an adventure for me. My world was expanded during that trip in so many ways; you took me to the Ford and Edison Museum, saw to it that I learned to swim, introduced me to the autoharp and piano and let me join in John and Becky’s party, I felt like such a big kid... thank you!

I don't think anyone would argue that Joan was one of a kind. For me, she was an incredible mentor, a teacher, a friend and a second mother. Her energy, spirit and courage (she was one of the first people I know to try video dating after Bob died!) kept her contemporary. Her scathing wit cannot go without comment (as many of us feared her until we got to know her!). So much of my past 25 years was influenced by her. I have missed her since her move to Morgantown and I am saddened to think of life without her, but so glad she is no longer in pain.
