Carl J. Malanga, 71, formerly of Morgantown, passed away on Sunday, February 6, 2011, at his home in Indian Land, SC.He was born August 26, 1939, in New York City, a son of the late Joseph J. and Carolina Graziano Malanga. Carl graduated from Cardinal Hayes High School in 1957 and magna cum laude from Fordham University in 1961 with his Bachelor of Science degree in Pharmacy as valedictorian of his class. He earned his Doctorate in Biological Sciences from Fordham University in 1970. Among his many honors and awards, he was elected to Rho Chi, the pharmacy honor society, where he served as President of the Fordham Chapter to Sigma Xi, the scientific honor society and was elected to membership in the American Society for Pharmacology and Experimental Therapeutics. He was listed in Whoâs Who in American Colleges and Universities, Outstanding Educators of America and American Men and Women of Science. Carl also served his country in the United States Army, on active duty in the infantry from 1962 to 1964 and in the active reserves as a member of the Medical Service Corps for five years.Carl came to Morgantown in 1970, where he taught at West Virginia University School of Pharmacy for 33 years, and influenced generations of young pharmacists and scientists. He was appointed the first Chairman of the new Department of Basic Pharmaceutical Sciences at the WVU School of Pharmacy in 1978 and as Associate Dean in 1991, where he served until his retirement as Professor Emeritus in 2002. Carl was an undergraduate advisor in the WVU Honors Program for 25 years. He served the American Association of Colleges of Pharmacy for many years as a delegate and as Chair of the Biological Sciences Section in 1993 and was President of the West Virginia Pharmacists Association in 2002. Carl received the West Virginia University Foundation Award for Outstanding Teaching in 1994 and the Golden Apple Award for Outstanding Teaching given by the Golden Key Honor Society in 1995. He also won the Outstanding Teacher Award given by the students of the School of Pharmacy 13 times during his tenure as a member of the faculty.Carl and his family lived in Morgantown for 33 years, where they were members of St. Theresaâs Catholic Church and active participants in St. Francis de Sales Elementary and High Schools. He was a member of the Knights of Columbus and the Morgantown chapter of the Kiwanis Club. Carl was born and raised in the Bronx, but was very proud to be a Mountaineer and to call Morgantown his home.Those who knew Carl well know that his greatest love, outside of his family, was teaching, and he will always be remembered as a gifted teacher and mentor. He participated in the annual Ecumenical Scripture Workshop sponsored by the Diocese of Wheeling-Charleston at the Bishop Hodges Pastoral Center in Huttonsville for more than twenty years. He was an avid golfer, and enjoyed the game with his brother, son, nephews and many friends. Carl was also a passionate gardener, meticulously tending his vegetable gardens for more than thirty seasons.He is survived by his wife of 44 years, Mary Lou, his son, C.J. Malanga III, M.D., Ph.D. and granddaughter, Christina Caroline Malanga, of Chapel Hill, NC and his brother and sister-in-law, Joseph J. and Elizabeth Malanga, of Albany, NY. He is also survived by his five nieces and nephews, their children and grandchildren.Friends will be received at Hastings Funeral Home, 153 Spruce St., Morgantown, on Friday, February 11, from 4:00 to 7:00 PM and at St. Francis de Sales Catholic Church on Saturday, February 12 for one hour prior to his Mass of Christian Burial at 11:00 AM, celebrated by Rev. Larry W. Dorsch. A private burial will be held at Lawnwood Cemetery in Morgantown.
