I was lucky enough to meet Don, or as I knew him, Donnie, about 2 years ago. I got in the car for a trip to Arthurdale with Candyce and Dora. I'll be honest, I didn't know what to expect. I had been told stories of this man that they were all so crazy about, and soon I would find out exactly why they all loved him so much. Donnie met us at the door that night and welcomed us into his home, he introduced himself to me and promptly asked me if I'd like a drink. The next several hours were spent taking about classical music and the Navy, and I learned so very much from this conversation with what had been a complete stranger. Over the course of that first weekend, we realized that we had someting pretty special in common, corny jokes. He had went back and forth with Candyce over the years, both of them always trying to get the best of one another. As I write this, I can close my eyes and see Donnie, in a grey sweatsuit, goblet and camel in hand, leaning against the door laughing and smiling, telling jokes and just so happy to have us in his home. Over the years I grew to love Donnie, if for nothing else than the fact that he absolutley adored the people that I loved so much, Candyce, Courtney and his Dorie. We've talked sports, birds, navy, economics, college educations, politics and even 4 year plans. I have to say that I have not met an individual quite like Donnie, and I am also sure that I will never meet another. I am so thankful for the time that I was allowed to get to know him, and my deepest condolences are offered to all those who knew him, to every life that he touched because I know there will always be a special place in their hearts just for him. Thank you Donnie, for being the man that you were, and thank you for loving the family that I love so dearly.

Don and I both joined the Economics Department at WVU in August 1981. Don came in as the new departmental chair. I entered as a brand new PhD and assistant professor. Don was my chair during the whole time I worked toward tenure and promotion to an associate professor. Don had a huge impact on the economics department and its faculty. By the time he stepped down as chair, we were a much stronger and better department. Personally, I benefited greatly from Don's role as a leader and mentor during a crucial part of my career. More importantly, Don was just a good guy. He liked people, loved to talk, and treated others fairly and respectfully. He helped to make life interesting and fun. My condolences to Don's family. Thank you for sharing him with the rest of us. I am out of town, so will miss the gathering for Don on Saturday, but I will be thinking of him and wishing that I could be present. Brian Cushing

My career in academia began with a phone call from Don Adams offering my first job out of grad school. That was thirty years ago, yet I remember it as if it were yesterday. I also remember the day, a few years later, when he came to me with an odd proposal that would fundamentally change my career. He needed someone to offer Comparative Economic Systems. No one in the Department, including me, knew much about the subject. But the course satisfied requirements in two other majors, including International Studies, and IS was willing to pay someone a summer stipend to tool up and offer the course. I took the bribe. That decision caused me to completely change my area of specialization, from public economics to the economics of socialism and transition. I have no idea why he chose me but I sure am glad he did. There are few persons who have had such a profound impact on my life. Thank you, Don.
I will be thinking of you Saturday but will not be able to attend your service. I'll be in Poland. Thanks to you.

Brothers and sisters can often grow apart, but there will always be shared memories of growing up together. My earliest memory of my big brother is sitting on the porch steps waiting for you to come home from grade school to take me to the drug store for a popsicle. That and all the other good memories of growing up make me miss being able to share them with you now. You always wanted and strove for "the best" and you found them in Joyce, Sean and Beth. I hope I get the chance to share some of the good memories with them. I miss having a "big brother". The "little sister" Nancy.

While I have not seen Don in many years, I have known him since first grade at Sacred Heart and all through Central in HS we were in the same homeroom for 4 years. He was bright, an outstanding runner, and popular. We also worked together at the Medical Library at Pitt. There was no doubt that he would do well and time proved he did. That he overcame an accidental gun shot at around the age of 7 or so and went on to be outstanding at track showed his determination. My condolences to his family and my prayers for him and all of them. Tom Carney
