Obituary of Freda Marie Fansler

Freda Marie Fansler (nee Govedich) August 10, 1920 – June 13, 2014 Born in Tucker County, West Virginia, Freda Marie Govedich was the second daughter of Felix and Nancy Margaret James-Govedich. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Wilburn Luther Fansler, Lt. Col., US Army (Ret.) and her sister Eileen. F. Marie Fansler was a 1939 graduate of Davis High School. She received her Bachelor of Science degree from West Virginia University in 1944 and a Masters degree from Kent State University in 1957. Her teaching career spanned 43 years, beginning in Oakland, Maryland, five years at Thomas High School and thirty-one years in Ohio. A scholarship, in her honor, was established by the Howland Classroom Teachers’ Association before her retirement. Mrs. Fansler’s professional activities included life memberships in the Ohio Education Association (OEA), the National Education Association (NEA) and the American Association of University Women (AAUW). She served as president of the Trumbell County Teacher’s Association (TCEA) and the Howland Teacher’s Association (HTA). She was elected into Kappa Delta Pi, the College of Education Honorary Society, and was past president of and a charter member of Delta Kappa Gamma, the honorary society for women leaders in education. Marie was elected into the Emeritus Club of West Virginia University. Her many civic and community involvements included the Trumbull County YWCA, on whose board she served as Secretary. She was a past president of the Reserve Officers Ladies Auxiliary and a council leader in the Girl Scouts of America. She was a life member of the American Legion auxiliary, the Tucker County Retired School Employees and WM of the Order of the Eastern Star. Mrs. Fansler was a member of the Methodist Church, Davis, West Virginia. She is survived by her only child, Nancy Jane Fansler-Blacksberg and her son-in-law, Monte, of Gaithersburg, Maryland, Davis, West Virginia and Anguilla, B.W.I.; her nephews, Paul Mosser of Michigan, Todd Fansler of West Virginia and niece Beverly Bruce Sutter, of Utah. She has grandsons, Randall S. Pitchford II of Plano, Texas and Robert T. Harris of Huntington, West Virginia and one great grandson, Randall S. Pitchford III. Hastings Funeral Home in Morgantown has been entrusted with arrangements. A graveside service will be held at Rose Hill Cemetery, Thomas, West Virginia on Friday, the 20th of June, at 5:30PM.
