Norman L. Howton, 72, of Morgantown, died suddenly at home on May 10, with family at his side. He was born in Dayton, OH on April 17, 1944, the son of the late Robert W. and Velma (Knight) Howton. He served in the U.S. Air Force for 6 years as a language specialist during the Vietnam years, and worked for the U. S. Dept. of Energy for more than 33 years as director of Human Resources before his retirement in 2000. Subsequently he worked as an independent contractor for Legacy Management, which he enjoyed greatly. In addition, he served on the board of the Literacy Volunteers of Monongalia and Preston counties for several years, most recently as president. Norman was gentle and friendly throughout his working years, as well as in his private life, and was always able to help everyone with answers to all sorts of questions in dealing with the federal bureaucracy. He will be deeply missed not only by his family, but also by people he helped and mentored. Norman is survived by his wife of 45 years, Marilyn, and his children Rachel and Christopher. He is also survived by his sister, Susan MacDonald, residing in Kentucky, and numerous cousins. In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by his brother, Robert L. Howton. According to his wishes he has been cremated, and his ashes will be interred at a future time. There will be an informal gathering at Hastings Funeral Home, 153 Spruce Street, Morgantown on Monday, May 23, from 5-8p.m. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorial donations may be directed to the Literacy Volunteers, 235 High Street, Suite 317, Morgantown, WV 26505.
