Obituary of Frederick Wilhelm Schaupp

Dr. Frederick W. “Fred” Schaupp of Morgantown died July 5, 2016 from complications of coronary disease. He was 75, born in Fulda, Germany, the son of Ludwig and Lina Schaupp and twin brother to Dietrich. Fred was a friend to all who knew him. He loved life more than most people could ever dream. Everyone who interacted with him could tell you an unbelievable story of their time together. Fred knew how to experience the meaning of living life to its fullest and shared this generously with others. Those of us touched personally by Fred will cherish the memories of his ambition and passion for living. Fred was a dreamer, and he chased his dreams, often making them a reality. On those occasions when he failed, he simply pursued his next dream with the same excitement and energy as the one before. Failure was never a concern because it was the journey itself that mattered. Fred was a citizen of the world. He loved to travel and experience people of all cultures. No matter his location on the globe or the language being spoken, he relished meeting and interacting with those he met along his journey. If he could find a flea market in a foreign land and buy a unique “something nobody at home had ever seen before,” then he would say, “all the better.” After graduating from Bethel Park High School in 1960, Fred earned a Bachelor’s degree in Business Administration from the University of Pittsburgh in 1964 and a Master’s degree in Business Administration from West Virginia University in 1968. He earned his Doctorate in Education Administration from West Virginia University in 1971. Dr. Schaupp held a faculty position at Fairmont State University in Economics, ultimately retiring as V.P. of Finance after 30 years of service. Fred co-founded D. Ludwig Galleries with his brother while in high school in 1957. This venture allowed him to combine his love of collecting antiques and art. Upon retirement, he invested his entrepreneurial energy into the Galleries while restoring significant historic homes in Morgantown. Of his many accomplishments, the one that provided him with the most satisfaction was his family and the experiences and memories that he and his wife of 39 years, Rebecca, created with their children. Fred is survived by two sons and a daughter, Christian, Fritz, and Ulrike. He was preceded in death by his wife, Rebecca and brother, Dietrich. The family will receive visitors at the residence, 128 Wagner Rd., Morgantown, from 1-4:00 p.m. Saturday, July 9.
