Obituary of Helen Antonek Wassick
Helen Antonek Wassick died peacefully on October 11 surrounded by her loving, devoted family.
Helen was born on August 26, 1924 in Osage/Scotts Run.
She developed an excellent work ethic at age nine when she took over the family gas station when her father died. These work habits followed her throughout her life. She was a force to be reckoned with in the early days of downtown Morgantown when she was Sales manager at Deane's Jewelers. After several years, she retired, only to return back to the work force at age 60 when she became Customer Service Representative for the US Forestry Services where she remained until her retirement 35 years later. Helen took pride in the fact that she was the second oldest US Government employee, or as she said only “old people retire”. She received many accolades and Vice President Al Gore called her “the government’s biggest secret weapon”. Never one to sit around, she started a weekly bible study group at Mapleshire which she continued for 35 years. Helen was also very active in many local charities and loved helping people.
Helen is survived by her son, John Wassick and wife Margaret, daughter Marlene Wassick Dinkler and granddaughters, Sofia and Catherine Wassick.
Friends and family will be received at the Christian and Missionary Alliance Church, 308 Elmhurst St., Morgantown, on Saturday, October 21st from 1:30 PM until the time of the funeral service at 2:30 PM with Pastor Doug Miller officiating.
A private family interment at East Oak Grove Cemetery will be held at a later date.
In lieu of flowers, donations to the Scotts Run Settlement House, PO Box 590 Pursglove, WV 26546 or the Monongalia County Child Advocacy Center, 909 Greenbag Rd., Morgantown, WV 26508 will be greatly appreciated.
