Mike & Payton Caffrey posted a condolence
Saturday, March 10, 2018
Rena,
Payton & I send our prayers during this difficult time. You and Roy were my fondest memory of Payton's time in Morgantown. I feel truly blessed to have met and had conversations with Roy. The two of you made Payton feel at home her freshman year and your enthusiasm and support for the team was amazing.
This world has lost a good man.
Sincerely,
Mike Caffrey

I am so sorry to hear about Roy. I know he always kept in touch with my grandmother (Jean Shaffer), and she really appreciated that. I will forever be grateful to Roy for helping to setup up my first job interview after college, at Bechtel Plant Machinery in Pittsburgh. I didn't get that job, but it was good experience and I still ended up in Pittsburgh, where I continue to work in mechanical engineering today. I know Roy will be missed by many whose lives he touched.

I was very sorry to read of Roy's sudden death last Sunday. I first met him in Illinois in 1957 where he was reviewing our work. He was very important to our families move to Pittsburgh in 1959. We're both very grateful to him for that. I worked in his department at W-Bettis. He was a well liked, hard working engineer who got things done. Phyllis and I had the pleasure of belonging to a couples bridge group with Roy and Mary, plus our coworkers Bill Monk, Irv Yanus and their wives. It was a fun group and lasted for a few years until moves and work assignments broke it up and we lost track of each other. Later we were shocked and saddened to hear of Mary's passing. I know they were both very proud of their large family; I'm sorry we never got to meet you or Rena. Roy stopped by our house a few years ago for a pleasant visit. He was remodeling his house in Upper St Clair. That is the last time we saw him. Your husband / father was a fine man. May he rest in peace. God bless you all.

Roy was such a presence--a big voice, a big laugh, and a big heart. Our families were connected by the blessing of Dave and Dani's marriage, and we all share in this loss. But we know that Roy and his beautiful Rena were people of faith, so we also share in that peace. Godspeed, dear Roy.

I will always have fond memories of Roy. He was a huge positive presence in any group. His laughter in card games at camp was legendary! He so loved life and his family, and was so diligent about contacting my mom, Aunt Virginia and Aunt Jean. I am so thankful for my last visit with him last fall, eating buckwheat cakes at Aunt Dolores's. My prayers and sympathy to Rena and all the family. I know he will be greatly missed.
