I was a student in her government class circa 1966. Remembered as an inspiration for encouraging students to think and express for themselves opinions about historical and current events. Her class helped me to think critically and act logically. Need more like Ms. Petopoulos.

In these last few years I've become a teacher myself and realized perhaps for the first time the sacrificial nature of the life someone like "Miss P" led. She was a great gift to me, to all of her students, to her own family, to her MHS colleagues, and to the community of Morgantown in the many ways she invested herself in the service of others.

Mary was a dear friend since childhood. Our families were close and we share many memories from happy times through the years. Mary's intellect, her love of learning, and her ability to relate to others resulted in her becoming an exceptional teacher as indicated by the comments in these tributes. She has left a beautiful legacy of having a positive impact on so many. We are all fortunate to have known her. My condolences to Melenie and Thomas.
May her memory be eternal.

Mary was a great teacher. She made history come alive but that is not what distinguished her as an educator. Her knowledge of the subject was beyond compare but that was not her greatest quality.
She was a great teacher because she really cared about her students. She respected us and believed in us and made us want to learn.
One of her greatest, and often repeated, lines: “There are two kinds if people in the world; those who are Greek and those who wish they were.” As a man who is proud of his cultural lineage when I was studying Greek at Duke Divinity School, I thought of Mary and wished I were Greek.
The world needs more people like Mary. Thanks your live for your students

I was a student in “Miss P’s” European History class in 1987 and learned just as much from her outside the classroom as within it. She was the only MHS teacher who called us by our last names (so I was “Miss Townsend”) and when we asked her why, she would always answer that “familiarity breeds contempt.” The irony of her reply was that she knew her students well, cared about us deeply, and invested in us both academically and emotionally. She knew when something was wrong and would discretely show us that she saw our pain and shared it. She also knew our friends and if one of them was having a hard day, she might say “Miss Townsend, Mr. Cardi looks like he could use a kind word.” She also loved to laugh with us and her classroom is one of my happiest memories, filled with the corny history jokes we would tell her. May those of us blessed to call her our teacher be as loving and present to others as Miss P was to us.

Mary Petropoulos was my friend, my high school history teacher and my godmother. I remember many visits to her parents home with my mother and have many good memories of having Mary as my history teacher and godmother. She was an inspiration to all who met her in her dedication to education and young people.

To the family of Miss Petropoulos,
She was my history teacher in 1960 at Morgantown High School. She was one of the best teachers I ever had. She really helped us to understand world history; she loved teaching and loved most of us!
Now that I have retired, I still to this day think of her and her classroom. I wish all of my teachers could have been like Miss Petropoulos.
Now she is in Heaven and willingly serving God.

Miss Petropolous, as she will always be to me, was a brilliant teacher. My high school years fell during an earlier time of political unrest for our country. She helped us to understand the issues and factions and to make sense of the discord. She sparked my lifelong interest in politics and public service. She represented all that a good teacher, a good citizen, and a good person should be.

My sincere condolences to Petropoulos family in your loss of a great lady. Ms. P was my teacher and a friend who will be missed. Every time we saw each other she would ask how I was and my family. She was always so caring and many life lessons were learned from her. I always thanked her for her patience and caring ways. When I think of Morgantown High School she comes to mind immediately. May you rest in peace.
