Obituary of Mary Petropoulos
Marina "Mary" Petropoulos, 86, of Morgantown, passed away on Monday, October 15, 2018.
Mary was born on December 19, 1931, in Morgantown, WV, a daughter to the late Thomas and Despina Petropoulos.
In 1955, Mary graduated from West Virginia University with a Bachelor of Arts & Master of Arts (1958) in History.
In 1959, she began her successful 35-year career as a public educator for Morgantown High School. In the classroom, Mary's lessons excelled in bringing history to life, inspired students to follow their dreams, and above all else to care for others. She served two terms on the Monongalia County School Board Superintendent's Steering Committee.
Mary was dedicated to community stewardship and helping others. In 1987, she was appointed by the Monongalia County Commission to serve on the Mon General EMS Board of Directors, and 1999 became the Chair. In 1999, she was appointed to the Mon General Board of Directors and served as the Chair from 2003 – 2007.
Mary was a member of the Assumption Greek Orthodox Church; her Orthodox faith and Greek ancestry were important aspects of her life. May her memory be eternal.
Mary is survived by her nephew, Thomas Petropoulos & sister-in-law, Melenie Petropoulos.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her brother, Christos "Chris" Petropoulos.
The family will receive friends from 4 to 8 p.m. on Friday, November 2, 2018, at the Hastings Funeral Home, Morgantown. Funeral Services will be held Saturday, November 3, 2018, at the Assumption Greek Orthodox Church, starting at 11 a.m. with Fr. David Shaw officiating. Visitation will be held at the church prior to services from 10 – 11 a.m. Interment will follow at Lawnwood Cemetery.
